Malawi, officially the Republic of Malawi, is a landlocked country in southeast Africa, formerly known as Nyasaland. It is bordering Zambia in the northwest, Tanzania in the northeast and Mozambique in the east, south and west. The capital and largest city is Lilongwe, the second largest is Blantyre and the third is Mzuzu. Lake Malawi with its beautiful bays,islands, light brown sand, stray palms and azure water takes about a third of Malawi's area. Malawi and its friendly inhabitants are known as 'the warm heart of Africa'. Malawi also has wildlife parks, a massive diversity of beautiful landscapes and high mountains, the landscape of Malawi is one of the most varied in Africa.
Tip: visit Cape Maclear (Chembe), a former hippie hangout and a favorite among backpackers, with its islands, forests and bay. There are cosy bars, restaurants, lodges and guesthouses in the town. Things to do in Cape Maclear include snorkelling, hiking, boat cruises, kayaking, and diving. Or take the ferry in Nkhata Bay to sail to Likoma Island, one of the most romantic destinations in Africa.
